My Top 5 Must Have's to Stay Healthy

Today’s blog is all about HEALTHY HABITS that we can FOCUS our attention on during this unknown and scary time. With what’s going on in the world right now, it’s really easy to get caught up in the media, checking the numbers and focusing on the bad. But if you look, there is still beauty in this chaos. These circumstances have forced us to slow down, pause, spend time with our immediate family members and gives us the opportunity to focus our attention inwards.

Here are my top 5 Must Have’s to Stay Healthy:

  1. Movement. This is my #1! Whether you want to go outside for a walk, stream a yoga video online, do some jumping jacks or practice the homework I gave you in the office (if you’re asking what this is, it’s the stretches I showed you and if you forgot, no worries, send me a message or comment below for some tips). MOVEMENT is everything. And frankly we just don’t do enough of it. Why is movement so good? It alleviates stress, boosts your mood, gets blood flowing and once you get going, you won’t regret doing it.

  2. Breath Work. Raise your hand if you’ve felt a little overwhelmed with what’s going on? I will admit there have been a few moments where I let my mind take over. It’s completely normal. It happens. It’s going to happen. But in those moments, take a minute to stop whatever you are doing and FOCUS ON YOUR BREATH. It feels great and it’s calming to the whole body. Try it. Breath work can be powerful. I like to inhale to a count of 4 seconds and match that, by exhaling to the same count of 4. Repeat until you feel your body and your mind slow down.

  3. Make a Reasonable List of Activities To Do Daily. There is a lot going on right now, for everyone. Many people are out of work, kids are on an extended break from school and some people are working from home. Others have become full-time caregivers, “homeschooling” their kids and then there are those that have to do both!! This is where we should all take a moment and reread #2. Stop and breathe.

Did you know I’m a fan of lists? I make them a lot. For everything. There’s something about it that makes me feel organized. I make lists to grocery shop, when I’m tackling home improvements (on a side note this is one of my hobbies…. I’m constantly on the mission of improving my interior space). I have gratitude lists, intention lists, a list of my current goals, life dreams, home improvements I’m looking forward to tackling etc, etc… I think you get the gist, I LIKE LISTS. My fave part about making lists is checking item’s off. It feels good! But do you know who likes it even more than me? My son, Niko. So if you have kids, this is a great activity to get them involved in too.

In the first few days of being at home I was a little TOO gung ho. I made a list each day filled with all sorts of things to do. But it was overwhelming and it had me exhausted by day 2. Then day 3, I went completely the other direction and scrapped the whole idea. So maybe don’t plan 12 things in one day, especially if you have young kids. Set a number that works for you. Be realistic, especially if you are juggling a lot right now. By making a reasonable list of daily activities, it gives some structure to your day. And right now, a little structure is a great thing.

  4. Create Healthy Boundaries with Social Media. THIS! I find when I”m feeling a little overwhelmed it’s usually in correlation with how much time I’ve spent reading stuff online. And I get it. I get sucked in too. But it’s typically a lot of heavy material that isn’t calming to the mind but has the opposite effect. So everyday I make it a priority to turn my phone off, or simply leave it in another room.

  5. Boost Your Immune System. Focusing your energy on keeping your body HEALTHY is never a bad idea. Here are a few things that we are doing in my house to stay on track:

    Superdosing with Vitamin C & D
    Eating whole foods
    Minimizing our sugar intake
    Getting quality sleep
    Reread #1….Moving our body daily
*we’ve also added in a few extra’s like green juicing, Niko get’s a herbal tincture by St. Francis called Deep Immune Kids and we both take probiotics on the regular.

Hope you guys find a little inspiration with my 5 Must Have’s to Stay Healthy!

P.S. Next week I’m thinking about trying something a little different….I’m new to the whole virtual practice thing but I was going to explore the idea of hosting a live webinar, showcasing some healthy ways to keep your body moving while at home.
